Grand River Raiders Announce U11 Head Coach
The Grand River Hockey Club continues to grow!  As we have put together our development team and begin the selection of coaches, we are excited to announce our U11 Head Coach, Adam Spylo.

Adam Spylo, (formerly known as Adam Nittel), brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role as the head coach of the U11 Grand River Raiders in the ORHL hockey league. With a rich history in professional hockey, Adam's journey from a local talent to an international player and coach is nothing short of inspiring.

Early Years and Local Roots

Growing up locally, Adam showcased exceptional talent on the ice from a young age. In minor hockey, he was drafted to the Niagara Falls Thunder (now the Erie Otters) in the OHL as a defenseman and later transitioned into a power forward, a testament to his versatility and skill. Known for his toughness, Adam was considered one of the most formidable players in the league, a reputation that followed him throughout his career.

Professional Career

Adam's professional career took off when he was drafted 107th overall and signed by the San Jose Sharks, a testament to his skill and determination. His tenure with the Sharks provided him with invaluable experience and exposure to the highest levels of competitive hockey. During the 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 seasons, Adam was awarded the AHL Man of the Year two years in a row, recognizing his exceptional performance and contributions both on and off the ice.

European Adventure and Transformation

After his contract with the San Jose Sharks ended, Adam took his talents overseas, playing in Germany’s DEL and Italy Premier League. This international stint not only broadened his horizons but also allowed him to experience different styles of hockey, enhancing his versatility and understanding of the game. In Germany’s top league, Adam took his style of hockey to new heights and earned the nickname throughout the league as “Wild Thing“ for his dynamic and intense play.

Coaching Experience

In the 2023/24 season, Adam was the head coach for the Waterloo U9 MD Black team. The team finished in 2nd place overall, with a remarkable +46 goal differential, scoring 70 goals and conceding only 24. His team was considered to be one of the hardest teams to play against, reflecting his effective coaching strategies and ability to build a resilient team.

Coaching Philosophy and Vision

Adam Spylo's coaching philosophy is rooted in his extensive experience as a player. He believes in developing well-rounded athletes who excel both on and off the ice. His approach emphasizes skill development, strategic thinking, and fostering a positive team environment. Adam's unique insights, drawn from his professional career and international exposure, equip him to mentor young players effectively and inspire them to reach their full potential.

Notable Relationships and Career Highlights

Adam developed a close relationship with Don Cherry, who coached him with the Mississauga Ice Dogs in the OHL. Under Cherry's mentorship, Adam became a well-rounded player, achieving a career highlight year with notable points and penalty minutes. He also served as the assistant captain for the Mississauga Ice Dogs, showcasing his leadership abilities and commitment to the team.

Sherwood (Sherry) Bassin, the owner of the Niagara Falls Thunder (now Erie Otters), also played a significant role in Adam’s development. Sherry took Adam under his wing and taught him invaluable lessons such as “adversity is your friend,” “find a way,” and “perfect practice makes perfect.” Sherry taught Adam how to be a professional leader and be accountable on and off the ice, to represent a team, a city, an organization, and himself with integrity. He emphasized the importance of always being able to walk into a room holding his head high while maintaining a humble and professional attitude.

Hockey talent runs in the family, as Adam's younger brother also pursued a professional career. His brother signed with the New Jersey Devils and later enjoyed a successful career in Switzerland, Germany, and Russia. The Spylo family legacy in hockey is marked by dedication, skill, and a passion for the game.
